Please share your earliest on-water memories. Some of my earliest boating memories go back to when I was about four years old. From the age of four through to around 12, our family spent three weeks every Christmas at Glendhu Bay in Wānaka, in New Zealand’s Southern Lakes region. During those years, our family owned a variety of boats, including outboards, jet boats and stern drives, so I was constantly around boats, engines and the lifestyle that comes with them. Boating also runs strongly in the family. My father, Neville Sutherland, was a highly accomplished jet boat racer. So, from my earliest days, I really did live and breathe boats. Those early experiences naturally led me toward a career in the marine industry.
What does boating mean to you? For me, boating is a chance to step away from the pace of everyday life and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. It’s about the experience just as much as the destination.
Please share some insights about Sports Marine. Sports Marine was founded in 1978 by Ian Williamson, and over the years has grown to become one of the leading marine dealership groups across Australia and New Zealand. The business has built a strong reputation for representing premium international boat brands while delivering a high level of service and customer support. Today the group operates across Auckland, Christchurch and Sydney and offers a full-service approach to boating – from new and used boat sales through to servicing, parts, accessories and ongoing customer care. One of the strengths of the Sports Marine network is its ability to operate efficiently across the Tasman, with vessels regularly making the journey across the Tasman to their new owners.
Tell us about your role at Sports Marine Sydney. My career with Sports Marine began in August 1988 in Christchurch, New Zealand, before making the move across the Tasman to join the Sydney dealership in 1992, where I have been ever since. At Sports Marine Sydney my role centres on working closely with customers and helping them find the right boat for the way they want to use it. A typical day might involve meeting with customers, arranging sea trials, coordinating deliveries, working with our service team and staying connected with the various brands we represent. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is seeing customers take delivery of their boat and knowing they’re about to start creating their own memories on the water.
What makes a great dealership? A great boat dealership goes far beyond simply selling boats. It’s about building long-term relationships with customers and supporting them throughout their ownership experience. Customers want confidence that the dealership will be there for them long after the purchase is complete.
Which brands does Sports Marine represent? Across the Sports Marine group we represent a number of leading international boat brands. These include Sea Ray, Raeline, Princess Yachts, Nimbus, Saxdor and Navan. In addition, Sports Marine operates Freedom Boat Club across New Zealand, offering a flexible membership-based boating experience. This diverse portfolio allows Sports Marine to cater to a wide spectrum of boating enthusiasts – from first-time boaters and club members through to experienced owners moving into larger luxury yachts.
How do the Aussie and Kiwi boating markets compare? Having a presence across both Australia and New Zealand gives Sports Marine a unique perspective on the boating market. While the passion for boating is the same on both sides of the Tasman, the conditions and boating styles can vary quite a bit. New Zealand boating often demands strong offshore capability, while in places like Sydney there is also a big emphasis on cruising, entertaining and lifestyle boating. Understanding those differences helps us match the right boats to the right customers in each market.
Any market trends you’ve recently observed? We’ve seen buyers placing greater emphasis on versatility, quality and ease of use. Manufacturers are also focusing heavily on smarter layouts and better use of onboard space, which makes today’s boats more comfortable and practical than ever before.
